Planning the 2.38 release

It’s that time again!

We’re coming up on 4 months post-2.37 release (September 2nd).

I’d like to propose the following dates for the 2.38 release:

  • Feature freeze on Monday, January 5th 2026
  • Release on Monday, January 12th 2026

As always, please use this thread if you have any thoughts on those dates, or if you need a pull request reviewed or think an issue is a high priority for this release.

I have just two PRs of my own that I believe should be merged before the next release:

I am also tracking:

  • the new wiener lcdf functions (cc @Franzi) – I’d like to get those into the compiler before the next release, but they do still need to be renamed to lcdf_defective
  • the numerical improvements to the laplace approximations that would allow us to expose those functions

Edit: new ones

I have the fix ready and need to push the pr for

fix gamma lccdf for alpha > 30 and overflow by spinkney · Pull Request #3264 · stan-dev/math · GitHub

Maybe I can get to issue #3153 but no promises

I just renamed all functions from wiener_lc(c)dfto wiener_lc(c)df_defective

This can be found in

Because I didn’t do any prep for the RCs over the holidays, the freeze will be starting tomorrow rather than today
