Reverting recent adaptation PR

Hey all,
I want to make an apology. I have realized that merging Stan PR 2836 was a mistake due to me misunderstanding how contentious the issue still was at the time. While the PR seemed relatively uncontentious in technical content, I didn’t take enough time to read through all of the various threads on the topic to understand that this PR didn’t adhere to the standards for collaborative behavior that we want to cultivate on this project. Sorry about that. For now I’m going to revert the PR and let it be submitted again for review after 2.21 is released tomorrow.

Thank you Sean! I really appreciate that you were willing to rethink this and take this action. The PR definitely does have technical merit and I’m sure it will eventually get through, but I think there’s greater value to the project and community to not push it through the way it happened.
