Yes, this suggests that something with the projection is going wrong, i.e., that the lme4 fits to the reference model fit do not work as intended (I guess the lme4 estimation algorithm does not converge). This is also what I wanted to investigate as soon as I have a little more time to play around with the lme4 tuning parameters.
