Post-doc (or ambitious doctoral) position in modelling global education indicators (Vienna, Austria)

Work with me as a post-doctoral or ambitious doctoral researcher to develop Bayesian statistical specifications and implement their estimation in the statistical programming language ‘Stan’ to reconcile education indicators at different ages along cohort lines. This is a joint project by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), where this position will be based (near Vienna, Austria), the Global Education Monitoring Report, and the UNESCO Institute for Statistics.

Full details are available here:

This is genuinely a one-of-a-kind opportunity that will allow you to both directly influence how SDG 4 indicators are tracked by the UN and to add to your portfolio of rigorous academic statistical research. For instance, a pre-cursor project led to the following publication in the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society:
https://academic.oup.com/jrsssc/article/71/5/1822/7073267
For a doctoral researcher, we could help arrange academic supervision at the University of Vienna or the University of Linz.

For this particular role, a prior interest or experience with education indicators is helpful but less crucial than technical methodological expertise and statistical creativity and problem-solving skills.

The application deadline is May 7.

By the way, your workplace would be in an old Habsburg summer palace…

Thanks for posting this interesting opportunity.

We’re always happy to help on the forums, especially for high value projects like this one!

Thank you. Btw. we also have a budget to commission smaller, more targeted assignments along the way to support the Stan modelling, e.g., to look into convergence issues we cannot solve ourselves etc. Those might also be of interest to a larger part of the Stan community who are not available for a full-time position or wanting to relocate. Watch this space!
