Possible postdoc opportunity at Uppsala University: Bayesian computation, MCMC/HMC, biomathematics, or agent-based modeling

Hi everyone,

Sara Hamis (@hamis ) and I at Uppsala University are looking for someone interested in developing a postdoctoral fellowship application with us.

The funding route we have in mind is the Wenner-Gren Foundations’ “Postdoctoral scholarships for training in Sweden” call:

To be clear: this is not an already funded position, and there are no guarantees. The idea would be to identify a strong candidate with overlapping research interests and then work together on an application, with Uppsala University as the host environment. Our shared interests include, broadly:

  • MCMC and HMC methods
  • Bayesian computation and probabilistic modeling
  • Probabilistic programming
  • Bayesian Benchmarking
  • MCMC for agent-based modeling
  • Gaussian processes
  • Parameter Identifiability
  • Biomathematical and applied modelling problems in pharmacology

We are especially interested in candidates who would like to work at the interface between Bayesian computation/methodology and challenging applications, including biological, medical, ecological, or other complex-system settings. Experience with Stan, HMC, probabilistic programming, simulation-based modelling, or computational statistics would be highly relevant, but the exact project would be shaped in collaboration with the candidate.

The Wenner-Gren call has specific eligibility requirements, so anyone interested should review it carefully. In particular, this route is designed to bring a foreign postdoctoral researcher into a Swedish research environment. You need to have gotten your PhD no later than the 31st of December 2026.

If this sounds interesting, please feel free to contact me via DM or email by the 23rd of August (AoE). We need to choose one applicant to propose. It would be helpful to include a short description of your background, your research interests, and why this kind of project and stay in Uppsala might be a good fit.

If you are coming to StanCon 2026, feel free to reach out to us.

Best,
Måns and Sara
