Hey, sorry but I don’t know the answer to your question. I just wanted to point you towards this thread where the sum-to-zero constraint has been implemented in brms. You could model the categorical effects hierarchically (with a shared scale) and retain the intercept as the average of your categories. This makes reasoning about priors a lot easier!
