We are happy to announce the last workshop at StanCon 2026 in August!
Contributing to Stan: A Developer’s Guide to the Core, Interfaces, and First Contributions
Would you like to contribute a new feature to Stan, or make your first contribution to the Stan ecosystem? This tutorial provides an overview of Stan from a developer’s perspective, covering the Stan C++ and OCaml core, the R packages, and how the different parts of the ecosystem fit together. We will also discuss the Stan development process, including how contributions are proposed, reviewed, and merged.
The tutorial is designed to help participants take their first concrete steps toward contributing. Using a selection of good first issues as examples, we will show how to get started, navigate the codebase and development workflow, and work effectively with the Stan developer community. By the end of the tutorial, participants will have a clearer understanding of where and how they can contribute, and they will be well-positioned to continue working on a contribution after the session with support from Stan developers.
