Oh, and I should have said you should get C++ tools installed and make sure they work before trying to go onto the next step. You should be able to open a terminal and do this: $ gcc --version and get an answer. This will check that the right version is on your PATH.

This is because your model is using an older Stan syntax, which was just recently update (also mentioned here: Parsing error with random effect in brms)
