Thanks. I was confused about what you meant by dependency. I thought you meant it was “soft” in terms of CRAN but would still be required in order for brms to work.

but Novartis can just not whitelist cmdstanr and there’s no problem.

I was also confused here about the goal, which I thought was to set things up so security-conscious users could use cmdstanr.

Ah, I understand the confusion now! I don’t think that was the goal of this R package repo proposal. I don’t think anything about this would be specifically targeted at security-conscious users. It would basically just be a less brittle (compared to using devtools::install_github()) way for regular users to install our stuff from GitHub. For example, it would make it easier for us to do patch releases (potentially even with binaries) via GitHub while waiting to get them through to CRAN.
