Interesting, will have a look a bit later.
For now I just prepared a cmdstan branch https://github.com/stan-dev/cmdstan/tree/parallel_reduce_sum that has everything you need if you are on linux (linux-stanc and correct stan math submodule).
If anyone builds themselves a mac/windows binary feel free to push it up to the branch or paste it here and I can do it.
