Ecology StanConnect 2021

Thanks for spearheading this – I’d be interested in attending. Depending upon the timing, I’d potentially be willing to present. I’m working on fitting an ODE system to in situ experimental data that captured the functional response of sea urchins grazing upon two alternative resources of drift algae and kelp. The Stan techniques we’re using are likely not remotely novel, but the conceptual approach we’re taking might be of interest; i.e., we’re using one of the ODE variables to model to “stomach fullness” of the sea urchins. Treating a condition such as fullness as a state variable provides a large amount of flexibility in mechanistically specifying the manner in which grazing dynamics vary over time in response to consumption of the other resources (as opposed to trying to model some sort of temporal dependency upon an individual parameter). Again, at the end of the day, we’re simply fitting an ODE system to data, so this might not be of interest to present (and no worries if not!) – at the very least I’d enjoy attending. Cheers!

Didn’t expect to see a beaver here. I’m also in Corvallis.

Hey, small world! I’m with the dept. of Integrative Biology, and I work in Cordley Hall on campus (or did, until the pandemic, etc.).

I was at the other end, Owen Hall, Civil Engineering. Your ODE model sounds interesting and definitely deserves audience.

Thank you! I know I’m brand new here and I have a lot to learn – please just let me know if there’s any way I can help with this meeting.

Definitely interested in attending. We’ve got some work using occupancy models with CAR components (thanks to a lot of help from @mbjoseph) to deal with non-reporting private land conservation that is available here that I’d be happy to present if it fits in the scope of things you’re looking for.

I am also interested in attending. I have been doing some work using Stan to fit predator functional responses to observational feeding survey data, but the models aren’t all that complicated or likely interesting from a coding/tool perspective.

That sounds great, I will attend. It sounds like you have lots of presenter options, but depending on your topic you could also consider @jauerbach – he has a cool model of plant responses to warming (I am biased as we work on it together) …

Based on all the replies though perhaps an occupancy model specific session would be good, if not this year, then another year.

Hi all,

Proposals are submitted to @SGB for a two-part Ecology StanConnect on 30 September (Thursday) and 4 October (Monday), in both cases beginning at 12:00 noon Eastern Time.

Part 1 focuses on models for biological inventory data (including but not limited to avian point counts). Part 2 is more of a grab-bag, but with a general focus on using Stan for modeling or workflow innovations. I’ll provide full details if these proposals get the go-ahead from @SGB.

I am really excited about the set of talks that came out of this, as well as the prospects for community building and for showing the field of Ecology what we/Stan can do.

Cheers
Jacob

I’m a bit confused about the registration. Stan - Events shows a registration link for the Ecology StanConnect meetings (which I used), but on Stan - StanConnect 2021 at the bottom there is an explanation that info about registration is not yet available. Same on the subpage for the second half of the meeting. Do I still need to regularly check for registration to become available, or does my registration through the link on the main event page suffice? It sound almost as if there will be two separate registration systems, with unclear interdependence.

Me, too!

May I bump this question? I feel that it is still unclear how to register, and it isn’t long till the meeting anymore!

Hi @Raoul-Kima , thanks for the question and the bump! The Stan - Events link is correct. I have received your registration. I’ll update the Stanconnect 2021 page asap. My life is a bit hectic right now, but we are on course for an awesome meeting!

Also, don’t neglect part 2, which will be on 4 October!

I’ve updated the website to include links to the registration on eventbright. The individual StanConnect pages should now be correct.
