Suppressing compiler warnings in RStan?

I tried compiling a Stan model after updating my Mac OS. Here’s what things look like now. Is there any way to suppress compiler warnings? Is there a way we can just turn them all off going forward? I can’t imagine a single situation where a user would want to see a C++ compiler warning.

I replaced -Wall with -w in ~/.R/Makevars, but that might not be okay for everyone.

You can disable the pragma warnings with -Wno-unused-pragmas, but I don’t know the specific flag for the boost warnings.

Disabling warning messages at the package level is somewhat at odds with CRAN policy:

  • Packages should not attempt to disable compiler diagnostics.

Even if it’s a runtime thing? Are there other packages that compile code generated at runtime?

CRAN also says,

In principle, packages must pass R CMD check without warnings or significant notes to be admitted to the main CRAN package area

and

Maintainers will be asked to update packages which show any warnings or significant notes, especially at around the time of a new x.y.0 release.

Do they do that?

I’m not actually sure on the answer to this, I would suspect not / they are rare if they are. The reverse depends for Rcpp / RcppEigen (tools::dependsOnPkgs("Rcpp") etc) are probably where I would start if I wanted to find something that does this.

I wonder if that specifically refers to the 00check.log files etc that are written to package_name.check/, or occasionally package_name/, upon running R CMD check; seems ambiguous.

I really only write niche packages for my own use, so putting anything on CRAN has always seemed like a bridge too far. Github is good enough for me.

Good idea.

I think we’re doing the dynamic linking of compiled models through the inline package. I think Rcpp’s being used for things like the callbacks to R.

The main advantage to CRAN is that they can distribute binaries for us. I’ve also heard there are people who will only use packages on CRAN, but I haven’t personally seen any evidence of that.

Otherwise, CRAN induces a lot of pain. We can’t release rstan and stanheaders in lock step, so our releases always break for a while until all the mirrors catch up asynchronously. We can’t embed the versions of Eigen or Boost we want because of size restrictions, so we have to use the ones in RcppEigen and BH. And it forces everything we do to be compatible with older compilers.

I’m getting similar output that I’d like to suppress on a Rmarkdown page, run on Github Pages server. The usual message=FALSE and warning=FALSE tags on Rmarkdown don’t suppress (makes sense, because these warnings are not from R). Are there any updates on how to suppress these through the R interface rather than command-line?

How has Rstan v2.21.2 resolved this? I am running this version but I’m still getting this error message.
