Configuration for clang++

Hi,

I’m currently downloading rstan to my computer.

Following the instructions, I downloaded the toolchain installer and then when running the chunk of code provided on the Github page as the step to a configuration, I received the following error message:

Error in file(file, ifelse(append, "a", "w")) :
  cannot open the connection
In addition: Warning message:
In file(file, ifelse(append, "a", "w")) :
cannot open file '/Users/tmechera/.R/Makevars': Permission denied

Here are my details:

  1. Operating system is macOS HIGH Sierra 10.13.5

Here is the output of

writeLines(readLines(file.path(Sys.getenv("HOME"), ".R/Makevars")))

You lack permissions to write files in your own HOME directory?

I got the same error. Do you know how I can solve this? Thanks!

I think the sysadmin needs to change your home directory to read-write for users.

You should be able to write to your home directory on a Mac. Somehow the R install may have gotten messed up. Who owns the Makevars file when you do

> ls -l /Users/tmechera/.R/Makevars

If the +w (writeable) flags aren’t set, you might be able to fix the problem with:

> chmod +w /Users/tmechera/.R/Makevars

which should make that file writeable.

Doing

> ls -l /Users/retowuest/.R/Makevars

showed that staff owns the Makevars file. Changing the home directory to read-write for staff then solved the issue. Thanks!

mine too. thanks everyone for the help!!!

This worked for me too! But I had to set permissions specifically for the

/.R/Makevars

file, just resetting permissions for the home directory didn’t solve it initially.
